Alan Fekete for Branch Committee

Professor, School of Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering

I am Professor in Computer Science (Engineering), with 37 years as member of our union, and I am currently on Branch Committee where I support Peter Chen's efforts to grow membership and be effective. I have supported others through difficulties with management.

I serve on Academic Board; through the years I opposed management proposals to shorten semesters, and argued against centralization and use of ticket systems that prevent relationships being built among colleagues.

University staff have immense talents, and we could do so much if not stymied by overwork, micromanagement, distractions from job insecurity and repeated change processes. The Union is the best hope of fixing these obstacles, and so it needs to focus on pragmatically improving working conditions here.  I will continue to bring NTEU closer to the daily concerns of staff (academic and professional, members and non-members). I seek alliances that build NTEU capability to work for these goals, while respecting members' time by focusing on effective action not performative protests.

I recommend voting for the members of Renewal. For Branch Secretary I support Beccy Connell; for Branch Committee I also support Beccy Connell and Jean Luc Barbara.
